Hope you’re all done with your shopping because it’s Christmas Eve and the stores will definitely be swarmed with late shoppers looking for a deal on a gift. I completed my shopping last weekend and let me tell you I definitely got bit by the capitalist consumerism bug lol. I spent over $300 on gifts alone. Oh to be a kid again, those were the days when your only focus was receiving the video game, barbie of that season, or top toy of that season. It's best to come in with a game plan because you’ll buy everything but the kitchen sink. Here are the benefits of creating a Christmas shopping list:
Saves Time: Instead of discovering gifts to buy, take the time to find presents that fit the need and personality of the recipient. It's better to get a mix of what you want and what you need. For my nephews, I got them clothes instead of toys. They’re fast growing boys who will benefit more from a new pair of jeans and shirt than another dinosaur toy. To tailor the gift to their personality, I bought them both Super Mario Bros. t-shirts. They are video gamefanatics lol, like their dad once was. Another great tip is to buy gifts throughout the year or 6 months ahead.
Saves Money: Create a reasonable budget! Pay your bills first, then buy gifts. I’ll be honest this year I didn’t set a budget but I know I wanted to be in the ballpark of no more than $350. I think I went a little bit over but it's only because I have a big family. Also, setting a budget of $200 - $350 has reduced impulsive purchases because you have a ceiling cap.
Reduces Anxiety: When you know what you want you’re more confident in your shopping power. You won’t be swayed by the pressures of Christmas advertisements. If you wait until the last minute and don’t have an idea what to get you’ll spend numerous hours at the mall or buying everything on Amazon Prime and hope it comes on time in the midst of the chaos. Be kind to yourself and plan ahead.
Bonus tip: This is not a christmas shopping tip but a statement: the White elephant gift exchange is the worst version of Secret Santa ever!!!! (I said, what I said).
Some of my favorite places to shop for gifts are Bath & Body Works, Marshalls, Target, Walmart, and Amazon is good for comparing in-store prices or customized items. Heed these tips and you’ll be successful for many Christmases to come. Happy Holidays y’all!
