Superheroes, villains, and comics have played a significant part in how I can view the world. intricate moving parts of love, greed, triumph, and loss are all rolled into the storylines. Comics are the ultimate “Black Mirror” of our world just with amazing wonders and of course super powers. I believe the metahuman powers and special abilities the creators wrote about represent the strengths we wish we could have or sometimes mirror in the face of adversity. They inspire us in the darkest of times and remind us to never give up hope and to fight for our basic human right to freedom, expression, and community. I guess that’s why I always saw a little of myself in heroes like Storm from X-men, Static Shock, Sailor Moon, and Batman. These are the characters that resonated with me in my childhood. Cosplay allows me to see my favorite characters in an image similar to me, a Black superhero.
Cosplay is the real life portrayal of a character from a book, movie, or video game this is frequently done with the anime genre. Though I’ve personally not had the chance to dress up as an anime character but I know once I get the chance Sailormoon is on the top of my list. I’ll admit I’m not an experienced or well skilled seamstress like other serious cosplay players are but I am committed to the accurate likeness and details when portraying a character. As seen below, for the Florida Supercon in 2019 I dressed as my favorite X-men Ororo Munroe (Storm). It was awesome to find graphic art that matched my costume perfectly. When I execute a character accurately it gives me great pleasure in reliving the nostalgia I experienced in my childhood and it taps into my true supernova. I believe there is a therapeutic aspect of cosplaying; it's the greatest form of expression and connection to the strongest version of yourself through a character. Also, it's just fun to escape to another fantasy world. You also find a community in cosplaying, people who can relate to the art of creation, it's a fun and sometimes expensive hobby that I love to partake in. Here is one of my favorite vendors for Halloween costumes.
My favorite place to buy costumes is Forplay Catalog. They have the sexiest and high quality products for your cosplay beginner needs or just for your regular pleasure. This year for Halloween I think I’m ready to explore other characters from my favorite movies or TV shows. Here are some ideas that I have below:
