There’s no doubt that this year and the pandemic has changed the way we do everything. From the way we party, the way we travel, the food we eat, going to the gym, getting our nails done etc. Making healthier choices was something I had on my vision board for this year but I hadn’t done much to keep a healthy habit. During the pandemic, everything has been slow, with anxiety levels rising and feeling so overwhelmed most days, one thing that was changing was my weight. Every time I stepped on the scale the numbers kept going up. I had a gym membership with LA Fitness but I decided to cancel it because I had no plan to return to the gym. That’s the moment I realized that I had to do something. My birthday was approaching in 50 days (at the time) and I decided to take on a challenge to exercise at least five days a week, reach 10,000 steps, drink a gallon of water and eat healthy. I decided to take my bike out of retirement and started to ride the bike in my community or at the trail close to home. My cousin became my accountability partner and we started working out together. When we do exercise we go on YouTube and do a booster walk or do Afrifitness, you can check out fitness with Jai’s article for more details. Here are some other ways to keep active.

1. Join a group challenge

Help keep yourself accountable. When you have others to uplift and motivate you the journey becomes easier. I joined a 100 day mind, body and soul challenge with Anomaly Lifestyle that started on September 24 and ending December 22. With this challenge there are five things we must do daily: watch a motivational video, meditate, drink a gallon of water, exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes and commit to a healthier eating habit. I haven’t done the best at keeping up but I will pick up the pace because it made a difference when I was more consistent.

2. Create a playlist

I find that creating a playlist with songs that will motivate me to workout helps. Sometimes when I’m in the mood, I'll put on that playlist and just jam out. I have iTunes and I use it to search for workout music. Dancing is a great way to sweat out those calories and practice on your choreography skills. Whenever I’m at home I think and see myself as a top dancer with my moves.

3. Ride your bike

If you have a bike, take that baby out for a ride. I’ve had a bike for about 3 years now and honestly I have watched that bike get rusty over the months. After buying it, I used to take it for a ride around the community where I live and just stopped. My parents threaten to send it to Haiti on many occasions but I told them don’t even think about it. Fast forward to 2020, riding a bike became a thing again and that encouraged me to take my bike ( I call him Blue) out of retirement. Some benefits of riding a bike include relieving stress, strengthening your immune system, boosting your metabolism, and improving coordination.
