There is a reason why resorts are so inviting. The bright, plush blankets, fresh flowers, well balanced décor and smell of fresh clean linens creates heaven on earth. Why shouldn’t your home follow suit? Home is where the heart is. It should also be a place where you can be your true restful, feminine and authentic self.

Engage Your Sense of Smell

Scent Is Everything. Come on, when you smell someone who smells good, you welcome the time around them. As women, our sensory memory game is on another level. Smells can either bring us childlike joy, physical calm or awesome energy. Whether it’s combating bad smells or creating a pointed aromatic space, our sense of smell is a game changer for making our house a home.

Here are some ideas to upgrade your home scent game:

  1. Place sliced lemons in the fridge, freezer and food disposal to keep a clean scent.

  2. Douse cotton balls with lemongrass essential oil and tape to the top of garbage cans.

  3. Burn pure essential oils and/or use a dehumidifier as often as needed. I love to put on lavender in my bedroom as I shower before bed.

  4. Dab cotton ball in a pure essential oil of choice and spread it over all light fixtures when they’re turned off. When the lights are on, the heat from the filament will warm the essential oil and cause the scent to permeate the room. I do this every week.

  5. Place plants and flowers in the bathroom and living room to bring a natural scent. I recommend eucalyptus in the bathroom, and a calming scent in your main spaces.

Engage Your Sense of Sight

Surround yourself with pretty things. If it attracts your eye, brings joyful memories or calms you, place it in your high traffic areas. Beautiful things make you feel pretty. You can place beautiful, inspiring quotes and pictures on the walls. Bring in your favorite color schemes and keep a tidy home.

Here are some ideas to upgrade your home décor game:

  1. Pinterest is great with ideas. Get a sense of what you like by creating a Home Décor board. Here is my Home Style board on Pinterest.

  2. Get a sense of what feelings you want to experience in each room.

  3. Decorate one room at a time and take your time.

  4. Use YouTube to find DIY options if you are working with a smaller budget.

Engage Your Sense of Hearing

Listen to things that empower you and uplift your spirit. My India Arie playlist on Pandora is always on my Smart TV. I love it because it includes neo-soul, Gospel, alternative soul and other Black classics that just make me feel good. While working, I always make use of YouTube’s smooth jazz, 80s or 90s RnB playlist or stream Miami’s Hot 105.1 station.

Here are some ideas to upgrade your music/sound:

  1. Use multiple music platforms to curate your playlist(s). I personally love YouTube because it is great and auto-playing tracks with similar vibes at no costs.

  2. Invest in a sound machine to block out outside noise and create the best sound environments for bed.

Engage Your Sense of Taste

I don’t know about you, I love food. I try my best to eat things I truly enjoy. Yes, there are healthy options out there that are tongue-gasmic. What’s more… my sweet tooth is on another level so I must have some tasty dark and milk chocolates present to engage my taste buds.

Here are some ideas to upgrade your meal experience:

  1. Plate your meals like a master chef. If your food looks appealing, you’ll enjoy eating it.

  2. Practice mindful eating. Let your food glide on and around your tongue and while chewing. Try to avoid distractions while eating.

Engage Your Sense of Touch

Texture is everything! Our sense of touch teaches us about the world around us as babies. Surround yourself with the things that bring out good emotions when touched. For me that’s fluffy, silky and smooth surfaces. Touch and sight together will help bring items in your home that inspire the most joy.

Make your home how you want it to be. Do it in your own time, within your own budget and for your own pleasure. Don’t make outsiders influence your home vibe.
