Dear Momma Of Little People

It’s ok to admit that you are not ok.

For the last couple of years since becoming a mom (almost 6 years ago), I’ve been suffering silently. I really couldn’t pinpoint what it was, but all I knew was that on a daily basis I suffered from being emotionally flat. Physically, I was exhausted every day despite taking my vitamins and watching my diet. Waking up every morning was a complete struggle. I was an emotional and physical wreck.

Being someone who comes from a Christian background, I believe God can heal all things. When you are sad you pray. When you are broken you pray. When you feel angry you pray. But what happens when you have these feelings every single day of your life? What happens when prayer no longer works? What happens when self care tactics just don’t make you feel happy like they used to?

I had to have an honest conversation with myself. “Maybe I am anxious and depressed ...I need to seek help.”

According to the CDC, about 1 in 10 women report experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Mom, I want to encourage you and let you know that you are not alone! It is OK to admit that you are not OK.

I decided to take responsibility for my own mental health and I went to see my doctor. Things have been looking up ever since.

I am currently on a low dose anxiety medication and that has done wonders for me. I am also continuing with my own personal self care plan by doing things that make me happy and give me self confidence.

These things include:

• Stepping outside for fresh air a few times during the day

• Eating a well-balanced diet which includes more fruits and vegetables

• Taking my vitamins and medications daily

• Meditating and praying.

• Starting a gratitude journal.

• Making time to be social with friends and loved ones.

In light of mental health awareness month, here are some tips to get you through any feelings of depression that may be helpful to you:

• Talk to someone who you trust.

• Be honest with yourself and do not underestimate how you are feeling.

• Seek help! Be honest with your doctor about how you are feeling. They may suggest prescribing something to help with your mood after a full evaluation.

• Establish a self care plan to help manage your own feelings of depression and anxiety.

If you or some you know are having thoughts of suicide, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 800-273-8255.

Momma, your kids and family need you. You need to be functioning at your highest self to be the best mom you can be! Being depressed can inhibit that. Please, get help. Life FEELS so much easier to live, because I got help. A healthier you is on the other side of the help you seek!

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month

Sincerely,

A Fellow Momma
