“pH balance…acid-base balance, is the level of acids and bases in your blood at which your body functions best.” (Healthline)
Vaginal health has been my overall mission this past 5 years. It was my third year of college when I experienced my first yeast infection. My 22-year-old self was definitely not mentally equipped to understand that my vagina had a natural flora that could be disrupted. I never knew my body could betray me in such a way – I was so confused by the itchy discomfort and cottage cheese-like discharge. To be honest, for a very long time my vagina did not exist to me beyond my natural bodily function. It was like a vaginal awakening that I had to maintain the natural environment (flora) by watching what I eat, beware of fragrance bodywash, and menstruation and sex naturally disrupts your pH balance. This led to my first visit to the gynecologist and over the years the GYNO’s office and suppository medications became my best friend.
For years, I was dependent on pharmaceutical drugs such as fluconazole, tioconazole, miconazole, and metronidazole which was the real kicker. Metronidazole is used to treat bacterial vaginosis, which is “… vaginal inflammation caused by the overgrowth of bacteria naturally found in the vagina, which upsets the natural balance” (Mayo Clinic). Many times, I was diagnosed with both. Women with underline health issues are prone to these infections such as diabetes or immune deficiency illnesses. The medical professionals are less inclined to recommend holistic remedies – the money is in the comeback.

Fortunately, my sister recommended I visit Dr. Mina and it has changed my view of doctor-patient relationships forever. Dr. Mina was so relatable, understanding, and most of all concerned in preserving the advocacy/agency of the patient. My voice mattered and she trusted me when I told her what worked for me and what didn’t. She wasn’t like most doctors who just told what to do or what medicine to take, one time I even had an urgent care doctor suggest I was a lady of the night or had an STI because of the frequency of my infections.

Under her care, I’ve tried the boric acid suppository treatment which basically is a medicine meant to reset your pH balance with
Here are some vaginal signs to pay attention to:

Coconut oil treatment
(Please consult your doctor before trying, 😊)

Lay a towel onto your bed to avoid any oil spills.
Have a paper towel handy for cleanup.
Wash your hands before procedure
Scoop one spoonful of coconut oil.
Use a clean spoon each time. I like to use a disposal spoon, like a plastic utensil.
Lay on the towel with your pelvic area on the towel
Insert a tablespoon of coconut oil up into the cervix area using two fingers
Let it marinate! Lol
Clean up using towel or paper towel
I recommend doing this at bedtime. Overall, I see that the organic coconut oil alleviated my issues for yeast infections whenever my pH balance was thrown off due to my menstrual cycle etc. The organic coconut oil treatment is NOT an effective treatment for bacterial vaginosis. Please see your gynecologist if issues persist. I am determined to go on a holistic medicinal journey for my pH balance to find a fundamental solution to the root issue.

I want to feel in control of my own body again and to not be afraid of the unknown triggers that are upsetting my feminine health, so that means educating myself to be more empowered to ask for more effective treatment. A happy vagina, is a (pH) balanced one.
