Just when I thought I knew everything I needed to know about Tina Turner, her latest HBO documentary showed me that she still has a few jewels to bestow upon us. I was deeply moved, inspired, and in awe of her determination to be solidified as a rockstar and recognized for her individuality & talent.
This documentary left me misty eyed on the struggle and triumphs Tina experienced. I encourage you all to watch it and experience it for yourself. You’ll definitely leave blessed and it has you dancing to some good music. Here’s the lessons I learned from Ms. Tina Turner:
1. Age is relative, so never give up on your dreams. I couldn’t believe that she was in her mid 40s when she released her first solo project “Private Dancer” and was 50 years old when she started selling out stadiums . Her story shows that no matter how many times you have to start over, do it because in the end it will pay off if you believe in your talent & worth.
2. Domestic Abuse Survivors have PTSD too. Also, you can be revictimized when asked to retell your story over again and over again. This is something I learned in therapy, I remember recalling a story of when I was working in a hostile work environment or speaking about the loss of my mother at times can put me in that same mental space and make that pain real again. So, protect your peace — forgive yourself & the people who have harmed you and do not dwell on the memory. Don’t give it that power anymore and you do that by moving forward and living mentally in the present.
3. You deserve love . You are enough, I don’t know who needs to hear this but you are enough and deserving of the love you desire. My heart breaks for the little girl and the woman who didn’t receive the love they desperately desired from the family in their lives. Learning that Tina never got to experience the love she needed from her mother or wanted from her husband and mostly was abused by the people who should’ve been protecting her is just heartbreaking there is no other way to explain it. In the end, she did find love with her sex husband and she moved at her own pace marry him many years later.
Wrap up! All in all, I’ve fallen in love all over again with the legend that is Tina Turner. This final farewell was much need for her fans to experience a piece of her history. I am honored to have watched it. Here’s a list of my favorite Tina Turner songs:
